On shear-induced turbulence in rotating stars

چکیده

We review various prescriptions which have been proposed for the turbulent transport of matter and angular momentum in differentially rotating stellar radiation zones. A new prescription is presented for the horizontal transport associated with the anisotropic shear turbulence which is produced by the differential rotation in latitude; this ‘β-viscosity’ is drawn from torque measurements in the classical Couette-Taylor experiment (Richard & Zahn 1999). Its implementation in a stellar evolution code leads to enhanced mixing, as illustrated by models of a rotating main-sequence star of 1.5 solar mass.

Mass - loss induced instabilities in fast rotating stars

To explain the origin of Herbig Ae/Be stars activity, it has been recently proposed that strong mass-losses trigger rotational instabilities in the envelope of fast rotating stars. The kinetic energy transferred to turbulent motions would then be the energy source of the active phenomena observed in the outer atmosphere of Herbig Ae/Be stars (Vigneron et al. 1990;Lignì eres et al. 1996). In thi...

Stellar evolution with rotation II. A new approach for shear mixing

Recent observations show Heand N-enhancements in fast rotating O-type stars, while studies on shear mixing in rotating stars have shown that the μ-gradients generally inhibit mixing processes. However, these studies (including ours) ignored the other sources of turbulence, such as semiconvection and horizontal turbulence, which may be present in the medium and may modify the onset of shear mixi...

Nonaxisymmetric Magnetorotational Instability in Proto-Neutron Stars

We investigate the stability of differentially rotating proto-neutron stars (PNSs) with a toroidal magnetic field. Stability criteria for nonaxisymmetric MHD instabilities are derived using a local linear analysis. PNSs are expected to have much stronger radial shear in the rotation velocity compared to normal stars. We find that nonaxisymmetric magnetorotational instability (NMRI) with a large...

Nonaxisymmetric instabilities of neutron star with toroidal magnetic fields

Aims. Super magnetized neutron stars of ∼1015 G, magnetars, and magnetized protoneutron stars born after the magnetically-driven supernovae are likely to have very strong toroidal magnetic fields. Methods. Long-term, three-dimensional general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulations were performed to prepare isentropic neutron stars with toroidal magnetic fields in equilibrium as initial co...

Rotational mixing in low-mass stars II. Self-consistent models of Pop II RGB stars

In this paper we study the effects of rotation in low-mass, low-metallicity RGB stars. We present the first evolutionary models taking into account self-consistently the latest prescriptions for the transport of angular momentum by meridional circulation and shear turbulence in stellar interiors as well as the associated mixing processes for chemicals computed from the ZAMS to the upper RGB. We...
